Vijayapura: Will the Congress party, which is in power in state, upset BJP’s winning streak and take the reins of Vijayapura city municipal corporation? This is the question being asked by the people in Vijayapura. The elections for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor will be held on Tuesday (January 9), 14 months after the councillors were elected.
The post of mayor is open for general category, while that of deputy mayor is reserved for scheduled tribe (ST).
On Monday, leaders of both the Congress and BJP were busy holding consultations with their respective councilors to finalise the candidates.
The 35-member house has 17 BJP, 10 Congress, 2 AIMIM, 5 independents and 1 JD(S) councillors. The BJP’s strength has come down to 16 following the demise of its member Vijayakumar Biradar of ward no. 29 three days ago.
Now, a total of 41 members including 34 elected corporators, 3 MLAs, 3 MLCs and 1 MP are eligible to vote in the mayoral poll. The magic number to take control of the civic body is 21. BJP has one MP (Ramesh Jigajinagi), one MLA (Basanagouda Patil Yatnal) and one MLC (Hanumanth Nirani) while Congress has two MLAs (M B Patil, Vithal Katakdhond) and two MLCs (Sunilgouda Patil, Prakash Rathod).
When the results of the elections to VCMC were out, BJP was in a strong position to grab both the posts and rule the CMC as the Independents had assured their support to the saffron party. But with Congress coming to power in the state, it is making all efforts to take the reins of the civic body.
Surprisingly, Vijayapura MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal who had played a major role in BJP’s victory in VCMC elections has not taken much interest in the mayoral poll.
President of BJP district unit RS Patil Kuchabal said the party’s candidates will be finalised on Tuesday morning and exuded confidence that the Independents will honour the mandate given by the voters in favour of BJP.
Meanwhile, the Congress party, which has 10 members, claims the support of two AIMIM members, five independents and the JD(S) corporator. In addition, it has two MLAs and two MLCs.
Congress, in a bid to attract Muslim members among independents and AIMIM, is expected to field a Muslim candidate, Mahejabin Abdulrazak Horti for the mayoral post. It is likely to field Dinesh Halli for the deputy mayor’s post.
