Pune Region Records Highest Organ Donors In Maha In ’23 | Pune News

Pune: The Pune region recorded highest 58 organ donors in the state in 2023, followed by Mumbai (49) and Nagpur (35). Pune’s dominance has continued this year too, with the families of three brain-dead individuals consenting to donate organs in the first week of January alone.
On Sunday, the family members of a 10-year-old brain-dead boy donated his organs, giving life to three kids.
Aarti Gokhale, coordinator of the Pune Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC), said, “The boy was declared dead at Satara Civil Hospital. We, however, needed to do his apnea tests, which could be done only at the Sassoon General Hospital. The two apnea tests required a gap of about 12 hours between them. Once doctors confirmed that he was brain-dead after the tests, we allocated his organs. Only ‘O’ positive paediatric patients could get these organs. So, we sent his organs to other hospitals in the state too.”
The apnea test is a mandatory test for determining brain death. The main objective of apnea testing is to prove the absence of respiratory control system reflexes in the brainstem when intense physiologic stimulation to breathe takes place, experts said.
ZTCC Pune covers Pune, Satara, Sangli, Nashik, Solapur, Kolhapur, Jalgaon and Dhule. In the last three years, there has been a year-on-year increase in organ donation in Pune ZTCC (see box). Kidney is among the highest in-demand organs for transplants, followed by liver, data shared by Pune ZTCC showed.
The surge in organ donors is not in proportion to the new patients added to transplant list every year, the experts said. In Pune region, 1,620 patients are in waiting list for kidney transplant, while 600 are awaiting to get liver, 45 for heart and 62 for multivisceral. Multivisceral transplantation involves transplantation of the stomach, pancreas, and small intestine and sometimes also the liver and/or the kidney.
Liver transplant physician Dr Sheetal Dhadphale-Mahajani, who is also the secretary of Pune ZTCC, said, “Pune ZTCC has been proactive in communicating with city hospitals and transplant coordinators. This has helped us boost the donors’ numbers. Having said that, the numbers are modest. Compared to the waiting list, they fall short.”
The data available with Pune ZTCC showed that as many as 158 organs were donated in the region last year, followed by 118 in 2022 and 97 in 2021.
