Kolkata: A 22-year-old man arrested for cyber fraud of a government employee residing in Durgapur and working in Kolkata — has spilled the beans on how some Nigerians had been teaching a few Indian youths from across India to carry out cyber frauds and even holding “classes”. He claims to have set up modules in Madhya Pradesh and Bengal after getting trained by a Nigerian fraudster at a hotel in Delhi
According to police, the victim received an SMS message on October 11 stating that her bank account would be deactivated if she did not click on the phishing link sent to her.She was also warned that her CIBIL score would be negatively impacted. The victim did as instructed and lost Rs 1.54 lakh after she shared the OTP that came on her mobile phone.
The accused, Vikas Raje (22) was arrested around 2am on Monday from his residence at Sainik Colony in Gwalior. The mobile used to access the internet for the bank transactions was recovered from him along with four SIM cards, five ATM cards and other incriminating documents. “Preliminary interrogation has revealed that this person used to work in a hotel in Delhi in 2021-22 when he came in contact with a Nigerian national. With no earning during the initial months of Covid, the accused learnt the tricks of cheating from the foreigner,” said an officer.
Raje was produced before JMFC court, Gwalior,seeking his transit custody.
