Bathinda: After 737 days, the Behbal Insaaf Morcha was lifted on Saturday. The morcha was started by Behbal Kalan police firing victim Krishan Bhagwan Singh’s son Sukhraj Singh on December 16, 2021 at Behbal Kalan bus stand.
Krishan Bhagwan Singh along with Gurjit Singh was allegedly killed in police firing on October 14, 2015.
After the special investigation team (SIT) submitted the status report in a Faridkot court on Friday, Sukhraj had announced to lift the morcha.
“As our main demand has been accepted and the fight will now be in the court of law, there is no more need to continue with the morcha. Now, we want the state government to put the trial in fast track court so that it can be completed at the earliest,” said Sukhraj.
He, however, questioned the role of Punjab Police IG-turned-AAP MLA Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh.
The morcha was lifted after performing some religious ceremonies in presence of Punjab education minister Harjot Singh Bains. Addressing the gathering, Bains said it could only happen during the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government as the previous governments played politics on the emotive issue.
This government ensured the accused are taken to the courts and now the legal battle will be fought in court to ensure the accused are punished, he said.
Earlier, a similar morcha – Bargari Insaaf morcha, just 10 km away from Behbal Kalan, had run for 192 days from June 1, 2018 to December 10, 2018.
The morcha was organised by Sarbat Khalsa appointed jathedar Dhian Singh Mand with assistance from jathedar Baljit Singh Daduwal. They sought justice in acts of sacrilege and killing of two protesters at Behbal Kalan.
The morcha was lifted after two ministers of Captain Amarinder Singh cabinet – Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa – and three MLAs had visited the protesters and announced to accept their demands.

The SIT submitted a status report, allowing the trial in the Behbal Kalan and Kotkapura cases to begin concurrently. The Behbal Insaf Morcha may end its protest morcha at Behbal Kalan. The SIT will continue investigations and file supplementary charge-sheets if necessary. The court adjourned the matter to January 20, 2024. Former Punjab home minister, DGP, IG, SSP, and others are accused in the cases.

Respiratory problems increase during this period. ‘Chilla-i-Kalan’ lasts until January 31, followed by ‘Chillai-Khurd’ and ‘Chillai-Bachha’.
