PANAJI: Suchana Seth, the 39-year-old Bengaluru woman who killed her four-year-old son at Candolim, has a glittering CV with fellowships and positions at leading international institutes, according to her LinkedIn profile. An alum of Harvard University’s Berkman Klein centre and Mozilla fellow at Data & Society, she also is a polyglot who speaks at least four languages, and holds a postgraduate diploma in Sanskrit from the Ramkrishna Mission, where she ranked first.
Suchana is the founder and CEO of Mindful AI Lab and is an AI ethics expert and data scientist with over 12 years of experience in mentoring data science teams, her profile claims.It adds that her expertise lies in scaling machine learning solutions at startups and industry research labs.
“Suchana is an AI ethics expert and a data scientist,” according to Harvard’s Berkman Klein centre. “Suchana is studying ways to operationalise ethical machine learning and AI in the industry,” the centre stated in a post last updated in 2020.
Among her other accomplishments are a research fellowship at the Raman Research Institute. She also apparently holds patents in natural language processing and was a senior analyst, statistics, at Geschickten Biosciences, where she used data mining techniques to explore the connection between protein binding data and gene expression data. She also features in the ‘100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics‘ list.
Suchana, originally from West Bengal, married a Keralite, Venkat Raman, in 2010 and their son was born in 2019. Soon after their son’s birth, Suchana and Venkat separated and filed a petition for divorce.
Their estrangement eventually led to the grisly death of the child, whose body Suchana stuffed in a bag and attempted to travel to Bengaluru in a taxi.
The murder came to light on Monday. One of her endorsements on LinkedIn, a platform for business and employment connections, says she is “an extremely quick learner”.
In 2010, Suchana participated in conferences on statistical physics at IIT Kanpur. She earned a BSc degree in physics from Bhawanipur Education Society College in Kolkata in 2006 and completed her postgraduation from the University of Calcutta in 2008. She secured first-class marks at both levels.
“I remember the girl. She was a bright student. She got a fellowship at the Raman institute for research, which was something special. It is not easy for a college student to achieve this feat,” a physics professor at Bhawanipur Education Society College said.
