Dibrugarh: Two persons were arrested at Demow in Sivasagar district, Assam, on Sunday night for allegedly supplying two grenades, one of which was used to carry out the blast in Jorhat on December 14.
The accused – identified as Rajpal Gogoi and Biplob Baruah – handed over the grenades to two Ulfa(I) overground operatives, Biraj Kachari and Achyut Gogoi, who allegedly triggered the grenade outside the military station, Headquarters 41 Sub Area, in Lichubari, Jorhat.Earlier on December 28, Kachari and Achyut were arrested.
ML Meena, Jorhat superintendent of police, said, “Gogoi and Baruah had supplied two grenades to Kachari and Achyut before the Jorhat blast. Although they did not physically hand over the grenades, they strategically placed them at two locations. One in the Teok area, Jorhat, and the other in the Rajmai area, Sivasagar. The Ulfa(I) overground operatives retrieved the grenades from these locations as per instructions.”
Additionally, Gogoi transferred Rs 5,000 to Kachari’s bank account for fuel and other expenses related to the attack, as a motorcycle was used in the operation, Meena added. The police had seized the motorcycle used in the attack.
On December 14, two Ulfa(I) operatives rode a motorcycle and threw a grenade at the military station around 7.30 pm. According to the police, Biraj was driving the bike while Achyut, a pillion rider, discharged one of the grenades.
An investigating officer on Monday said, “Only one grenade was used in the Jorhat blast. We are investigating if the second grenade was used in the blast outside a CRPF camp in Sivasagar on December 9. Further investigations are on.” Source link
