Game Of Thrones Jon Snow Series Not Moving Ahead
The Game of Thrones spin-off series focused on Jon Snow is no longer in the works. Kit Harington himself, who played Snow on the HBO show, confirmed the news to ScreenRant.
He said the show is not currently in the works. “It’s off the table because we all couldn’t find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough.” So it was decided stop development “for the time being.” Harington said he hopes there could be a time “in the future” where he returns to the idea. “But at the moment, no. It’s firmly on the shelf,” he said.
A report in 2022 said HBO was considering a Jon Snow series, and author George R.R. Martin later confirmed this and said it was Harington’s idea. However, in Hollywood, development means just that–a show is being developed. As part of the development process, the team decides if it should or can be seen through release by experimenting with story ideas and concepts, among other things. In the case of the Jon Snow series, Harington and the team apparently didn’t find enough compelling material to move forward, so they aren’t.
“I hadn’t really ever spoken about it, because it was in development. I didn’t want it leaked out that it was being developed, and I didn’t want the thing to happen where people kind of start theorizing, getting either excited about it or hating the idea of it, when it may never happen,” he said. “Because in development, you look at every angle, and you see whether it’s worth it.”
In May 2023, HBO’s Francesca Orsi said the team was “working deeply with the writers” to put the Jon Snow series together. But at that time, Orsi did not know if the show would “go all the way,” and now Harington has confirmed that it won’t.
While the Jon Snow series is not happening, Season 2 of HBO’s popular House of the Dragon series debuts this June. After that will come the Hedge Knight series in 2025.
