Elderly woman suffers severe burns in New Town house fire, son injured while saving her | Kolkata News
KOLKATA: A 64-year-old woman, Bhabani Mondal suffered 80% burn injuries and her son, Bibhas too suffered severe burns while trying to save her when their house at Sulanguri in New Town caught fire on Tuesday morning. Both of them were admitted at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
Police suspect an electrical short circuit had led to a fire that soon engulfed the kitchen where a gas cylinder exploded flaring up the entire house.
Police said the fire broke out around 8.30am where the two lived. Bibhas was still asleep when the fire started. When he realised the intensity of the blaze he tried to save his mother whose room door was closed from inside. He broke open the door and brought his mother out while risking his own life and both suffered severe burn injuries.
While locals had joined in dousing the fire, two fire tenders finally extinguished the flames. Local MLA Tapas Chatterjee visited the place later in the afternoon and promised a compensation of Rs 50,000 for the family.
