Countdown to Fenwick’s final days in New Bond Street as former flagship set to shut in early February

Fenwick’s flagship New Bond Street London store is finally set to close, bringing to an end 133 years’ trading on the capital’s luxury shopping thoroughfare for the independent department store retailer in February.

Although a date has yet to be officially confirmed, the store is apparently trading in its final weeks, according to sources, and will host a major closing down sale before an early February closure.

The Fenwick website has begun an ‘archive sale’ exclusively for the Bond Street location, with the 70%-off offer now extended in-store across thousands of items.

Plans to shut-up shop and sell the building were first announced in December 2022 with property developer Lazari Investments paying around £430 million for the building. The new owners are converting it into an office-led mixed-use development that will still include two floors of retail (vital, given that it’s on one of the world’s most in-demand luxury shopping streets).

Sitting at the junction of Brook Street and New Bond Street, Lazari said the aim is to partly futureproof the development with “world-class retail accommodation” at street level and on the first floor, with upmarket offices above. The building isn’t listed but is within the Mayfair Conservation Area.

The retail area has already been reduced from five floors to three, with the lower-ground and third floors closed to customers.

Reports first emerged of the sale in late 2020 indicating the store was making less than half the amount of its Fenwick counterparts in Brent Cross, Kingston and Newcastle.

The latter store — which is in the firm’s home city — has now taken the crown as Fenwick’s only flagship and is the subject of an ongoing £40 million multi-year investment makeover, which includes a new frontage for the Tyneside store, as part of its 140th anniversary celebration.
