Bus Strike: Buses Operate Normally Despite Bandh Call in Coimbatore | Coimbatore News

Coimbatore/Salem: The bus strike call given by trade unions fizzled out as more than 90% of the buses operated in the Coimbatore region on Monday.
As most of the TNSTC staff reported for duty, passengers did not feel the pinch of the strike in neighbouring districts too.
Close to 600 buses are operated in Coimbatore connecting destinations within the district, while another 350 buses are operated to various places across Tamil Nadu.Within the city, buses are operated from Singanallur, Ukkadam and Gandhipuram bus stands. TNSTC officials said almost all the buses from these stands plied as usual right from morning.
“We had ensured that school and college going students and office goers are not affected,” said a TNSTC officer. “The 580-odd buses, which were scheduled to leave various bus terminals at 6am, left the place with passengers without any trouble,” he said.
TNSTC officials said while a few of their staff did not report for duty, 40-odd private drivers were roped in to operate the buses. Police personnel were deployed at all the bus terminals to ensure smooth operation of buses.
Trade union members, who staged a protest in front of Sungam bus depot, removed their shirts and sat on the road to intensify their agitation.
Buses to the villages in and around Pollachi, Mettupalayam, Annur and Sulur areas were also operated as usual. In the Nilgiris and Tirupur too, the impact of the bus strike was not felt.
TNSTC officials in Salem, Namakkal, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts too said that mofussil and town buses were operated as usual by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation – Salem division.
“Salem city police and the district police had beefed up security at bus stands to prevent protests by trade union members,” said a senior TNSTC official. Interstate buses plying to Karnataka and Kerala were also operated from border districts in the western region.
