Lucknow: A repair work being carried out on the statue of socialist leader Ram Manohar Lohia at Lucknow University campus triggered a rumour that the statue was broken by some rowdy element.
The rumour brought student wings into action, who announced to stage a protest. The incident took place when LU’s public work department was about to begin the repair work of the statue and some student leaders caught sight of the broken statue.
“The moment we got to know that Lohia ji’s statue was broken we sat in protest. The protest was called off after University officials assured us to find out the reason behind such poor condition of the statue,” said Mahendra Yadav of Samajwadi Chhatra Sabha.
LU spokesperson Durgesh Srivastava said, “The statue was not broken by anyone, since it is an old statue placed in an open space due to weather conditions paint and plaster got peeled off. We are carrying out maintenance work on all statues on our campus.”
