Kolkata Traffic Police: Kolkata Traffic Police Implements 3D Road Designs to Reduce Accidents | Kolkata News
Kolkata: The Kolkata Traffic Police has decided to use multiple 3D road design interventions, which create optical illusions and force drivers to slow down, on two of the most accident prone roads of the city — DH Road and Basanti Highway — in order to check road accidents.
“From a distance, it seems as if the spot with the 3D speed breaker has been dug up or is elevated. This automatically makes the driver slow down. Now, if you are driving on the left lane, a similar marking will let you know exactly where the blacktop ends and point to the spots where pedestrians will be waiting to cross over. During the day, you will see pedestrians hopping through the painted blocks,” an officer explained.
Kolkata Traffic Police and PWD will jointly experiment with thermo-plastic paints, which will be a variation of 3D versions of speed bumpers, edge marking and crosswalks in the city. Additionally, all important crossings on both stretches will get a fresh coat of paint to demarcate the different flanks and pedestrian channels.
With the Gangasagar Mela kicking off on January 8 and a massive influx of pilgrims expected from January 10, the work on DH Road is expected to be completed in the next 96 hours. This will cover the most accident prone zones like Thakurpukur 3A Bus Stand and Silpara. Work on Basanti Highway – the whole stretch of which came under KP on Monday – is also underway with two dummy 3D speed bumper work been already completed, besides putting up of modern road signage.
Lalbazar had asked PWD to ensure that crossings too are properly marked. The police have also urged Metro, KMDA, KMC and PWD to set up crash barriers on Park Circus connector, RG Kar Bridge and median boulevard with iron fencing along EM Bypass and DH Road. Earlier, KMC DG (roads) had informed the road safety committee that the work would only be taken up once the fund crisis is resolved. Both KMC and the police have now decided to approach the state to ensure road safety funds are provided adequately.
