Elephant Herd: Elephant Herd Damages School in Coonoor: A Search for Food Turns Destructive | Coimbatore News
Udhagamandalam: A herd of eight elephants entered the premises of a private estate school in Nonsuch tea estate near Coonoor and damaged a portion of the school’s compound wall late Sunday night.
The herd uprooted a few areca nut trees on the premises and ate the leaves. The elephants also broke down the school kitchen’s door, and ate two bags of rice.
Coonoor forest range officer Ravindharan told TOI, “A herd of eight elephants have been roaming in Burliar and Katteri areas for the past two weeks. The herd was last seen moving downwards to Yanaipallam two days ago, but it returned to Katteri area. On Sunday night, the herd entered the school.”
The herd is said to be roaming just 1km away from the school. However, the school management went ahead with conducting classes on Monday.
Ravindharan added that the forest team was unable to monitor the elephants as the weather condition in Coonoor was misty. “However, a team of six forest staff will stay in the school on Monday night to monitor the movement of the elephant herd,” he said.
