Hyderabad News: Second tiger dies in Telangana, two more tigers missing | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Telangana forest department officials have confirmed the second tiger death in the Kagaznagar Tiger Corridor, located in the Asifabad district of Telangana. The search is ongoing for two missing tigers, including sub-adults from the same family.
A sub-adult tigress was discovered dead in Daregaon, Kagaznagar, two days ago. Wildlife wing officials initially suspected a territorial fight as the skin, claws, and teeth of the deceased big cat remained intact. However, there is now suspicion that poisoning of a cattle carcass could be the reason behind these deaths.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests R M Dobriyal stated, “We have information about two tiger deaths.” Regarding the rest of the family, he mentioned, “I am on my way to the field to ascertain the situation.”
While Telangana had no reported tiger mortalities in 2022 and 2023, the state has witnessed two tiger deaths in January this year. A female adult tiger and another sub-adult tiger are reported missing.
Telangana Chief Wildlife Warden Mohanchandra Pargaien stated, “We are attempting to track the remaining tigers.” Responding to allegations of misleading information and secrecy about the tiger deaths, Pargaien clarified, “The veterinarian conducting the post-mortem examination stated that it is not a case of poisoning. We are investigating further to determine what transpired. We refrained from revealing the second tiger death due to a lack of confirmation. We did not mislead.”
PCCF Dobriyal and Chief Wildlife Warden Pargaein were en route to the location. The National Tiger Conservation Authority has dispatched a member and experts to the spot. Both deceased tigers were resident tigers of the Kawal Tiger Reserve, and they were sub-adults. Officials found a cattle kill 300 meters away from the tiger death spot.
It is estimated that there are seven tigers in the corridor area near the Kawal Tiger Reserve. However, the reserve reported no tiger sightings during the census.

B’gavi part of Maha before 1947: Min | Bengaluru News

BENGALURU : Karnataka BJP has called for the resignation of Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister for women and child welfare, after she allegedly claimed at a public event that the border district of Belagavi belonged to Maharashtra prior to the country’s Independence.
Hebbalkar made the remarks during a discussion on the history of Kannada and the state Karnataka at the Sixth Kannada Convention at Karadga in Belagavi district on Sunday.A video of her purported comments was widely circulated on social media.
It obviously ruffled feathers since the border dispute has been a touchy issue. BJP was quick to latch on with MLA SR Vishwanath demanding that chief minister Siddaramaiah dismiss her from his council of ministers.
He emphasized that Belagavi was integrated into the state of Karnataka “long ago” and accused Hebbalkar of raking up a row for political gain. “Minister Hebbalkar has insulted 6.5 crore Kannada people. Belagavi belongs to Karnataka, and that’s why the government organizes the assembly session in Belagavi,” Vishwanath said.
Former chief minister and state JD(S) president, HD Kumaraswamy, while criticising Hebbalkar, urged Siddaramaiah to “advise” his ministers against making controversial statements on sensitive issues. “Hebbalkar may have an affinity for Maharashtra, but she should refrain from raising settled issues,” Kumaraswamy said. “Belagavi is an integral part of Karnataka.”
Former deputy CM and senior BJP MLA CN Ashwath Narayan pointed out that while Karnataka’s existence resulted from the “unification of many kingdoms”, there was no reason to “delve into the past”.
“Belagavi belongs to Karnataka. There should be no political conspiracy on this,” Narayan said. “Neither Kannadigas nor Marathis will support Hebbalkar’s comments.”

On borrowed time: Why DTC must switch gears in Delhi | Delhi News

NEW DELHI: The CNG bus fleet of Delhi Transport Corporation has aged considerably. All its 3,191 CNG-run buses are now over 10 years old, leaving them vulnerable to breakdowns.
According to transport department’s data, DTC has 4,391 buses in its fleet, of which 1,200 are electric and the rest are CNG. Though CNG buses in Delhi are allowed to run for 15 years, senior officials and experts say that, in an ideal situation, these vehicles should not be run after 10 years, as, by then, they have been used exhaustively and are in a rough condition.
“Most of these buses have run past 8 lakh kilometres,” a senior official said.

On Borrowed Time: Why DTC Must Switch Gears

The number of CNG buses in Delhi in 2014-15 stood at 4,705, but this figure dwindled to 3,760 in 2020-21 and further dipped to 3,191 in 2023. However, the city has seen an addition of 1,300 electric buses in the past couple of years. The city also has 2,841 cluster buses, taking the total number of buses to over 7,200.
A senior official said that one of the reasons that new buses hadn’t been procured for a long time was tenders being cancelled due to issues with the annual maintenance contract. “Most vendors wanted to provide buses, but did not want to enter into AMCs. There were some vigilance cases as well,” the official said.
It’s the commuters who bear the brunt of the situation. Around 25 buses grinded to a halt on city roads every day during the previous summer, causing congestion on roads and slowing traffic movement. Data collected from various agencies showed that over 7,000 buses broke down in 2021.
PK Sarkar, former head, transport planning, School of Planning Architecture, said: “In many advanced countries, buses are replaced in eight years. But we are running them for 12-15 years. Also, these buses are run in very rough conditions and, as a result, the chances of breakdown are high.” Sarkar said while many new buses had been procured, the number wasn’t enough. “We have around 7,000 buses, whereas the fleet should be at least 15,000-strong,” he said.
Over a decade ago, Delhi government, in its bid to provide “world-class” service, had inducted low-floor buses, of which 25% were air-conditioned. But after the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the plan went off-track. During the same period, Delhi government filed an affidavit in Supreme Court, informing it that the city needed 11,000 buses.
Delhi Transport Corporation did not respond to queries on the matter.
Former deputy commissioner in Delhi’s transport department Anil Chhikara said: “These buses are of better quality when compared with their roadways or conventional counterparts. That is why, they are able to handle up to 15 years.” He added: “The solution to this problem is immediate procurement of buses so that longer or tougher routes are given to the newer vehicles.”
International Council On Clean Transportation India MD Amit Bhatt said, “The operation cost as well as emissions increase as a bus grows older. The question is how we replace them. First, we need to replace them at a faster rate due to the ever-increasing pollution and, second, switch to zero emission vehicles, that is, electric ones.”
A senior official of Delhi government said, “By 2025, Delhi will have a total of 10,480 buses, with 80% of the fleet being electric, thus saving 4.67 lakh tonnes of Co2 annually.”

Congress prepares for Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, awaits permission to march through Manipur

Congress readies to embark on their much popular Bharat Jodo Yatra’s second version- Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra. The Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will be launched from Imphal on 14 January, and culminate on 20 March in Mumbai. However, Congress has on Monday informed that they are yet to receive “ground permission” from the Manipur government for launching the rally in Imphal.

The Congress leaders had earlier said that on 14 January several leaders of the party, including chief ministers and MPs from across the country will gather in Manipur for a peaceful rally.

The AICC in-charge of Manipur, Girish Chodankar said that the party leaders met the state chief secretary Vineet Joshi during the day and was told that the matter was with Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

The chief secretary assured that they will be informed about the granting of the permission on Monday evening itself, he said.

Further, AICC general secretary KC Venugopal said that the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra will be flagged off on its scheduled date, and that the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP)-led government in the state should give the ground permission for it “tonight itself.”

“Even if the permission is not granted, we would like a word on it,” Chodankar said adding the party leaders met the chief secretary with no intention to politicise the issue.

Notably, Manipur has been in the grip of continued ethnic violence since May, which took place between Kuki and Meitei communities. Over 180 people have been killed in it so far. Several hundreds have been injured.

“We applied to the Manipur government on January 2 itself for the ground permission for the launching of the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra at Hatta Kangjeibung in Imphal East district on January 14, but it has not yet been approved so far”, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president Keisham Meghachandra said.
